Emergency Departments

The Naloxone Project’s Emergency Department (ED) Program is the cornerstone of our work and a critical driver of our overdose prevention efforts. Designed to support hospitals in routinely providing take-home naloxone, the program recognizes emergency departments as a vital point of contact for individuals at heightened risk of overdose.

Many patients who could benefit most from naloxone including those treated for overdose, individuals with opioid use disorder, and patients prescribed opioids for pain encounter the healthcare system through the ED. By embedding naloxone distribution and overdose prevention education into standard emergency department workflows, The Naloxone Project helps reduce barriers to access and ensures patients leave with a practical, lifesaving tool.

Through sustained partnerships with hospitals and healthcare systems, TNP supports clinical teams with naloxone supply, implementation guidance, and patient education materials, helping to normalize overdose prevention as a standard component of emergency care and strengthen continuity of care beyond the ED visit.
